Upfaders promo video

This is a short promo film for the Upfaders project we run

Joseph Rowntree Foundation - The Housing Maze
Here's a film which we made for The Joseph Rowntree Foundation. After three months in studio exile, we're really pleased with the result. You can watch the film below or on the JRF website - Housing Maze  We visited research groups in Swansea, Belfast, Edinburgh and York and developed storyboards and scripts with them, and recorded dialogue. The JRF selected 8 of these stories to best represent their research findings. We then disappeared into the studio to hand craft 15 characters and 20 sets to animate with. 10 000 tiny movements and clicks later and its done!

Lime Trees - Survival Tips for Deaf Teenagers

This is the latest in a series of films made with our good friends at Lime Trees for the Deaf Children, Young People and Family Service. This time the young people were in charge of animation while we generally got in the way! This film has also been published by NHS National Deaf CAMHS. 'Survival Tips for Deaf Teenagers' looks at how to handle awkward situations that come up in everyday life. We think that this film is really charming - the honesty of the characters the young people made contrasts brilliantly with the sets which are somewhere between 2D and 3D. This is a technique we are keen to develop in future films.

Award Winning Aspergers Syndrome film

Published and distributed worldwide, and a youtube smash!
The Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) project uses animation and audio to enable young people with AS to explain what it is and express how they feel about it. They give very personal insights which could only be achieved through using these mediums and techniques. We worked very closely with staff at Lime Trees in planning and running the project, which was a key element in our success in working with the young people. This film won the Animation award at the Scottish Mental Health film festival in 2008, and has been very well received by the clinicians worldwide who use it in their practice.

NHS 60th Anniversary

As part of the NHS 60th Birthday Celebrations, we were commissioned to create an interactive piece of public art that would be easy for passers-by at York Hospital to stop and try. We recreated the NHS logo in a 10x6 grid and invited patients, doctors and visitors to decorate a cell and say one or two words about what the NHS means to them. We feel it contrasts really well with the official logo and highlights the fact that people are at the heart of the service.

Top Tips for communicating with Deaf Young People

This is the first film we made with a group of Deaf young people at Lime Trees in York to help teachers and pupils to improve their communication with them. The film has been very well received and is published and distributed by the NHS National Deaf CAMHS. We've had lots of really positive feedback from deaf and hearing people alike. We had another great week supported by Lime Trees fantastic staff and very quickly learnt to sign 'tea, milk, two sugars'!

Anti-Littering advert

This is an anti-littering film produced for the City of York Council Neighbourhood Services and aimed at teenagers. This was a tricky subject which demanded a stealth attack to change the attitudes of teenagers who drop litter. We tried to engage young people with humour whilst also pointing out that dropping litter might well be a sign of other minging habits! The film has been used successfully by York City Council Neighbourhood Services who have now shown it to thousands of teenagers in the city.
